Stenosis is a condition of the spine where degenerative, or congenital processes causes a decrease in the central spinal canal (where the spinal cord is) or at the lateral recess (where the nerve root leaves the spinal cord). This narrowing can lead to more serious symptoms such as radiating pain or weakness into your arms or legs. Stenosis is a common cause of radiating pain into arms or legs in an adult over the age of 50. Central canal stenosis is narrowing of the central spinal canal where the spinal cord descends from the brain to the lower back. The common symptoms with this are bilateral (both) leg pain, weakness, or numbness that increases with walking. When present, the symptoms usually come back after a set distance (2 blocks, 10 minutes, etc). Lateral canal stenosis is generally characterized by pain, numbness, or weakness into one arm, or leg.
